Against My Desire 1 by ~TallGuyKen shows every element of a fine intaglio print: dynamic linework, a great tonal range of aquatint and diversity of textures, pushing the traditional technique with a bizarre biomechanical subject.

Description

I really do enjoy doing acid etch printing. It has a nice calming quality for me. On the other hand, my teacher gave me a hell of a time with the process of coming up with a print for this project. We argued and argued about what we considered art, fine art, good, bad, worth doing, ect. All the things that artist argue about. This arguement went on for a couple months on the same project and I ended up with about 100 drawings. Finally I was able to come up with one that he settled with.

The idea came from the argument itself. I was feeling that what I wanted wasn't holding up to the onslaught of the teachers ideas, and so I was slowly being consumed by them. The image is both a comment on that and me poking fun at him. He likes doing images of rabbits, and he does them very well. They are not you average rabbit images and tend to be dark. He is a good artist.

I took his love of the rabbit, and reversed the idea that I was being consumed to his rabbit being consumed. I tend to do robotic or mechanical drawings, so the rabbit is being transformed and consumed by these elements.

Dont get me wrong though, my teacher and I have a good relationship and he is a wonderful teacher. The poking fun was done in good humor and he was aware of it the whole time.

The original project was an exercise in marbleing and aquatinting.
