Artist's Comments

I really do enjoy doing acid etch printing. It has a nice calming quality for me. On the other hand, my teacher gave me a hell of a time with the process of coming up with a print for this project. We argued and argued about what we considered art, fine art, good, bad, worth doing, ect. All the things that artist argue about. This arguement went on for a couple months on the same project and I ended up with about 100 drawings. Finally I was able to come up with one that he settled with.

The idea came from the argument itself. I was feeling that what I wanted wasn't holding up to the onslaught of the teachers ideas, and so I was slowly being consumed by them. The image is both a comment on that and me poking fun at him. He likes doing images of rabbits, and he does them very well. They are not you average rabbit images and tend to be dark. He is a good artist.

I took his love of the rabbit, and reversed the idea that I was being consumed to his rabbit being consumed. I tend to do robotic or mechanical drawings, so the rabbit is being transformed and consumed by these elements.

Dont get me wrong though, my teacher and I have a good relationship and he is a wonderful teacher. The poking fun was done in good humor and he was aware of it the whole time.

The original project was an exercise in marbleing and aquatinting.

Against My Desire 1 by ~TallGuyKen shows every element of a fine intaglio print: dynamic linework, a great tonal range of aquatint and diversity of textures, pushing the traditional technique with a bizarre biomechanical subject. (Featured by `stigmatattoo)

I had a teacher who was always pushing for darker darks, & another who was so intimidating that a number of students dropped out of the art school altogether (if they'd stuck it out they'd have realised that, yes, he was very! intense, but it was because he was passionate about art & teaching). I have little respect for teachers who try to push subject matter on a student- one of the things I think artists need to learn pretty much for themselves is what is art to them- art being something that's entirely subjective- the whole one person's crap is another person's treasure thing.

As I so many non-artists love to say- I may not know what art is, but I know what I like.

This piece is striking and original. Ain't conflict grand?

This is great! Sometimes I think art is a joke. I draw for merely my own entertainment. I do the things I'd like to see or that I am feeling. I don't like people telling me what I should or shouldn't do. I'm glad I had some pretty cool teachers. I know I'm still flawed in alot of ways but I like to evolve at my own pace and reckonize my faults to perfect my stlye. But it almost feels like the art becomes meaningless when they start putting textbook words down your throat.
It's great that you guys have a good relationship, though! He's just trying to push you forward. :)

This is very impressive! I took intaglio for a few quarters and struggled with aquatinting (I messed up so many plates!) The imagery is thoughtful, well executed and definitely reflects the feelings you explained in your comment.

thankyou, I am back in intalglio this semester again, with the same teacher. The result is the same, he doesn't seem to like my imagery all that much. He does like my technical ability. I just added three of the plates from this clas with two more to be finished this week.
