Artist's Comments

Brass, copper, and black patina. Aprox. 3.5 inches tall (from top copper ring to bottom of shell), 2.25 inches wide and half and inch at its deepest. The shell itself is 1.25 inches wide and half an inch deep.

The idea and form of this piece has both Japanese and mechanical influences. I wanted a piece that would reflect a beautifully polished outer shell, while revealing the inner workings. The gears and process behind the beauty.

The shell is smithed brass that I cut to reveal the inner space. I then constructed a gear like piece that floats in the center on a rivet passing through the center. I placed two more rivets to the top and bottom of the center rivet. They pass all the way through the brass shell. The shell and all was dipped into black patina, and brass brushed to soften the finish. I then polished the shell back to the brass color, leaving the black patina on the inside to add contrast. The chain, produced from copper wire stripped from the wiring in my school, connects the shell to the brass hanger, which is then connected to a large ring by more copper chain.

This is gorgeous. The weight of it must mean that it moves beautifully when worn, and the copper just glows!
